Commander Maddox, the scientist who worked with Data after Doctor Soon when he first started functioning wants to dismantle Data in order to create more androids. Data makes a decision to resign from Starfleet to stop the process and Captain Picard ends up in a court battle to decide if Data is a lifeform or owned property.
