- When Mina recalls her previous life as Elisabeta she says she remembers a land beyond a great forest. "Land beyond the forest" is the literal meaning of Transylvania.
- I Believe the design for "the old Dracula" (in the castle in Romania) is heavily inspired by the makeup, hairstyle and speech of Princess Dragomiroff in the film MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS . Even the name fits : draculea, order of the dragon, dragomiroff.
- A scene in which Mina seduces Van Helsing was filmed but cut.
- The horses pulling Dracula's carriage (when Johnathen Harker is taken to Dracula's castle) move in slow motion, probably a reference to NOSFERATU - EINE SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS in which Count Orlock's carriage moves in fast motion.
- Winona Ryder saw the script when it was originally going to be made as a TV movie, directed by Michael Apted. She took the script to Francis Ford Coppola, whom she had not spoken to since withdrawing from The Godfather: Part III [1990] due to exhaustion six months earlier. Coppola agreed to make the film, and Apted stayed on as executive producer.
